weird lights? [Dec. 29th, 2009|04:38 pm]

winnipeg

[elvis_pez]
Last night was anyone driving down kenaston around the cheap theatre/big box stores? I saw these columns of light all over the sky, some were white and faint but there were a few really bright orange ones across the sky, all different lengths... I've never seen anything like it!

Anyone know what that was all about?

Since I know you all value my opinions on beer, let me tell you that Deus is the sweetest smoothest beer I've EVER tasted. EVER. I believe I was correct in speculating that it may be what Odin has on tap in Valhalla.

It's 11.5% and it tastes like its about 4%, and there's no foul aftertaste, however there is a delicious one. It's $22 per bottle, but I assure you that if you are serious about beer, it's worth every goddamnned penny. For best results and aeration, drink from a narrow fluted glass. You can order some Deus glasses here.

Deus, in all its splendor.

McNally is closing its Polo Park store and is filing for bankruptcy protection. I am le sad. I always preferred them to Chapters. I'm glad they're keeping the Grant Park location, that place was always magical to me.

Also, my G-ma goes there, sits with a book, dog ears the page, then comes back the next day to continue where she left off. It MAY be her fault they're going bankrupt.

Moving [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:38 am]

Do stores give out used cardboard boxes still? I'm moving and in need of a bunch of good size boxes for packing.
If so, where could I go to grab some?

Or if anyone has boxes from Christmas lying around I could come pick them up.
Thanks.

Can anyone recommend... [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:06 am]

winnipeg

[atomicat]
...an orthopedic surgeon who doesn't have huge wait times?  I was originally referred to Dr. Heddon which at first I thought was great given his recommendations and rating however I've come to realize that he has somewhat of a double-standard.

"I required a Hip replacement at the age of 24 years old. I didn't know if I had any options and Dr. Hedden gave me hope I didn't have before. He was so kind and explained everything to me in a way that put my mind at ease and made me look foward to the future with my new hip. I would recommend him as an excellent Dr. as well as person."

"I met with Dr. Hedden who immediately said that life is too short to waste the best years of your life in pain and he would replace my hip."

But not it seems if you're a 43 year old rural cripple who's best chance of getting off of disability is nature photography.  I just found out after a year of waiting that he considers me to be ineligible for a hip replacement, two actually, even though I have trouble climbing stairs, can't carry loads, can't walk in 6 inches of snow without difficulty, etc etc etc.  I've been forced to abandon my half-way renovated barn for the winter because I can't carry firewood and can't haul my water.  So, I've been evicted for the winter months because of this.  Someone recommended Dr Barron to me and I'll be asking for a referral to him, any info or other recommendations?  I hate reading all this "answered all my questions" crap as he has yet to answer a single one of mine, and doesn't listen to a damn thing I say.

rental cars [Dec. 29th, 2009|09:46 am]

winnipeg

[lidnsya]
Anyone have recommendations or experience with renting a car?

I don't care what it looks like, so long as it works. Also, I am only 23, so preferably somewhere that doesn't charge insane under 25 fees. It would be for a weekend, going out of town, but returning to the same location.

I've tried booking with Enterprise twice before (once online, and the second time by phone, then a follow up in person) and both times I showed up to find they had no cars available...

Thanks!

What is the best art supply store, in terms of selection & price? I'm specifically looking for good acrylic paints that aren't too expensive. I've been to Opus downtown, but I found their selection a little narrow, and the price seemed kind of steep. Any liquidation-warehouse type art stores around??

residential parking ban [Dec. 28th, 2009|09:29 pm]

winnipeg

[ambivalenttooth]
I live in an apartment building on a residential street (that is not a snow route). I don't have a parking spot and there is a residential parking ban. What am I supposed to do? I called 311 and they said that they aren't plowing in my area, so does that mean I can park on my street? or no?

My fiance and I have no plans for new years but were thinking of maybe venturing out for once. Neither of us are huge into the bars or dancing much and are looking for ideas as to what we can do for fun that night. Nothing too terribly expensive either though. Suggestions?

Travel agent search. [Dec. 28th, 2009|09:47 am]

[salsadancing]
Hello Winnipeg!

I was wondering if any of you knew of any reliable travel agents in the city. I'm looking to go to Bangkok in January and am new at booking international flights. I'm also a student at the U of W, in case there are any student deals that I am unaware of.

Thank you!

winter driving [Dec. 27th, 2009|01:31 am]

Anyone having any useful tips for getting my stupid ass car in and out of my apartment parking lot after this snow fall.  It took me fifteen minutes of rocking the car back and forth this morning to get it out, and another five to get it back in after work.  While this is better then being completely and totally stuck, it's pissing me off beyond belief.  I suppose the answer is, "buy snow tires" but that's not in the budget this month, so what else can I do.  People say, "put weight in your car", "sprinkle cat litter", and "take the bus" but seriously, any help?

Block Heater Outlet Help [Dec. 26th, 2009|05:21 pm]

winnipeg

[jordan_ma]
The block heater outlet at my apartment usually blinks slowly when not being used or stays on when being used.
But recently it started to do a fast blinking when I plugged in.
When I tried a different cord instead, it stayed on without blinking.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows why it was blinking fast. Does that mean the other cord is broken and not working?
Thanks for any help.

Are there any art secondary schools in Vancouver? [Dec. 26th, 2009|01:48 pm]

vancouver

[x_tokyoblaque]
So I've been searching in and out for about a week now to transfer to a new school, like the Rosedale Heights School of the Arts or Langely Fine Arts School.... I've heard of Athena at Windermere but that's a little far and I'm looking into something that covers actual ART classes. Has anyone here graduated from one?

Thanks for all the comments on my sushi post by the way! I seriously don't know which one to pick @@
